Brief for music magazine

1.    Collect some evidence of current music magazines: NME, Kerrang, Q
2.    Analyse how they construct meaning for their audience – Front page, contents, double page spreads
3.    Establish a set of rules (codes and conventions they use) / guide to creating a effective music magazine – for each page
4.    Keep a record of your research
Planning: Xmas holidays, for presentation to class 9th January 2012
5.    Decide what type of music magazine you are going to design – what is the purpose of your magazine?
6.    Decide who is the audience (who is it aimed at?) – this will affect your design
7.    Draft sketch what you want on your front cover: colour, images, title, text, etc. – explain why (follow your rules)
8.    Draft ideal contents
9.    Photograph appropriate images for each page: stage a band / artist – consider locations, costume, props, makeup
10. Draft interview for double page spread – consider language used appropriate to genre and audience
11. Keep a record of your planning

last week in media

This week in media we had been focusing on the preliminary task as we had to look at everyone’s front page and contents page and give them analysis on what went well and what went bad.
What went well for me:
¨       The main point for me was that I meet the preliminary requirements!
¨       Made the target audience clear and precise.
¨       Colour scheme was good and was continual.
¨       Layout was uncluttered and was structured well.
What improvements may be made next time:
¨       Make the front cover more like a magazine by adding a barcode, ear piece, ect.
¨       Proof reading.
¨       Make the research and planning clear in the presentation.
My conclusion
I believe in order to improve my grade I must take on board all the positive criticism given by my teacher and my fellow class mates and add this to my final product. I think I also feel I need to research in longer detail my next task so I have a clear understanding about what I need to create and how I can improve from my first task onto my new task. I will also type all of my work in word to make sure it is grammatically correct and all spellings are correct also.

This weeks media work

This week we have been making sure our preliminary task is ready as in tomorrows lesson we will have to present our work to the class and explain out ideas behind it. I have also been making slight adjustments to my front page so that it looks up to the standard I can do at the moment.

The adjustments I have made are just adding a few minor details and also making my contents page look like  contents page. I have also I changed some parts of my background on the front page and contents page to make the pictures not look streched.

Peliminary task

For my prelimanary task i was told to create a front page and a contents page which was all about a school magazine. I decided to create the whole magazine around sixth form life as in how people are coping with the change from GCSE to AS and the change from AS to A2.

Magazine front cover:
This is the front cover I think I coped well with the design of it but I did struggle with using In-design as I am new to this software I found it difficult to cope with the layout and tools of it but as I have a vague understanding of Photoshop.

Contents page:
This is the contents page for my magazine this was much easier to make but the hard part was working out what points and text in it as I would need to fill empty spaces. When I got stuck on this part of the task I would use a real life magazine as guidance to see what else I could add without copying its every step.

last weeks work

Last week for part of our preliminary task we had to produce school magazine won in-design. I must admit that in-design is not second nature to me yet so it may not be the best product.

Thursday 17 November 2011

This week i have been using InDesign to help me understand how i am going to create my coursework. i have learnt how to use many of the tools on this publishing software. for this task we had to make a magazine cover about smething linked with our school(Harris Beckenham).
This is my first product from InDesign that was made just so that we can get used to it.

our first attempt at making a magazine :P

this is the magazine we had to make in groups for certain TA's. we did this task to show that we knew what different TA's were associated with and the types of colours certain groups were linked with.

media studies homework

1.This magazine(NME) is a music magazine that focuses on alternative/rock music. This magazine was first published on the 7th if march 1952. it is created by an organisation called time inc now part of IPC media.
2.The purpose of this magazine is to inform people about what is happening in the certain music genre as at the top of the magazine shows new bands. So it also used as advertisement for bands and music.
3.Its target audience can be for men and women any age but it is targeted at people who like this genre of music. we know this because the front cover has no dominant colours that do not link to either men or women so it will most probably link to both genders. Also there is no indication of what the age group is.
4.The symbols and pictures used on the front cover can effect the target audience in different ways for example in this edition of NME it uses the band (arctic monkeys) to gain support from their fans. this helps as some fans of the band would not usually buy this magazine but may this edition then when they read all the insides they would be more likely to but it again. Another way in which symbols are used in the 3 other major titles located at the bottom of the front cover. This can help gain support for the magazine as people would like to see whats happening to the bands they like but they would not just skip to the part that shows them the bands they like there will be more inclined to read through the whole magazine leading to the gain in popularity.
5.The contents page gives extra information to the target audience as it shows what bands are in the weeks edition what news there is and what gigs are coming up. this helps people know what there looking for in this edition. The contents page also shows the genre of the music by showing the types of music shown by the bands which will help reduce the target audience to fans of music.
6.The values that are being suggested by the target audience is rebellious as they dress and sing about uprisings and rebellions this will entise the people who have a rebellious side to them.
7.The magazine is very effective at targeting their audience as the all the articles and interviews used in the magazine will link to their target audience. This is because their whole product is linked in with the target audience so if i did not link with their target audience they would not be able to sell many of their products.
8.The production of magazines is all determined by the target audience they have to make it for this would effect the production as they would have to choose certain colours and fonts etc. i have also learnt that the production of the magazine can also be effected by the company behind it so the views of the magazine will be reflected in the views of the company.
9.This can help me in coursework as it helps know the basics to create a front cover and contents page for a magazine and also helps understand what context i must have in my coursework to stay to my target audience.
